The internet has replaced many things in my life, like the phone book, encyclopedias, the telephone, sleep, newspapers and photo albums. But after a few interesting experiences with online dating sites I'd never used it for my social life. I made some online friends at writing sites, but I never saw it as a substitute for a real social life.
Then I moved to New Jersey and had no real social life. I stumbled upon Meetup.com and now I have a bit of one. I haven't met any BFFs, but I've met lots of women I like and Zoe and Zach have had some playmates. I even have Meetups that don't have anything to do with my children. In my immediate area alone, there are Meetups for EVERYTHING. I highly recommend it - even if you haven't just moved to a new area. It's so nice to find other readers/mothers/knitters/political activists/pug owners/whatever-ers and not have to worry about making plans. The organizer sets things up and you can RSVP. The groups have calendars, photos, reminder e-mails, you name it. All you have to do is show up.

Hey Jersey Girl, We just moved out of Jersey. We used to live in Glassboro, very pretty down there, and I really miss living 40 minutes from the ocean, and 20 minutes from Philly. Enjoy your time there. -NVGal
